The USS New York in Subic Bay has consistently remained on top of the list of dive / wreck sites to visit, and this should not be surprising given the view that it affords to the diver. Even those who have gone there before keep coming back for more.

The ship was originally called New York and later changed to Saratoga during World War I. Some time later it was rechristened the USS Rochester. By World War II the US military had decided to scrap her but the war led them to just abandon the ship. Eventually she sank beneath the sea. Fortunately it is not that deep (about 30 meters). However, if you have little experience, diving with a guide is recommended.

There are plenty to explore in the USS New York in Subic Bay. The starboard has been badly damaged, but several corridors remain intact, and you can explore them; there are also several decks, including one where you can see the barrel guns. There are also the officers quarters, the engine room and other ruins. There are also traces of the catwalks.

Although there were reports that the ship was blown up, the wreckage at the site does not seem to support this theory; even though it has been damaged, there is still enough to see that a blow up appears unlikely. The wood elements of the ship have gone but the steel remains. There is another deck filled with portholes, and the bulkheads have been washed away so exploring the area has gotten easier.

The USS New York in Subic Bay can be found very near the pier at Alava. If you take a boat it will be less than five minutes before you get to the site itself. Although scuba diving in Subic is usually best from January to June this site offers excellent visibility throughout the year. The cost of diving starts at a $100, although if you want to use other equipment and learn other techniques, the cost will be much higher, $300 and up.

If you go through a Philippine dive site guide, scuba diving in Subic will be mentioned frequently. If you have ever wanted to savor the beauty of nature and also experience a bit of history, then the USS New York in Subic Bay is one site you will want to check out, as there is just a lot to see and go over.
