Balut is a popular snack in the Philippines that is made out of fertilized duck embryo that has been kept warm in the sun and kept in a basket to retain its warmth. After nine days, the eggs are held to a light to reveal the embryo inside. Approximately eight days later, the eggs are cooked, sold and eaten. Vendors keep the Balut in a basket with sand and thick cloth to retain it warmth. Balut is eaten with salt to add seasoning and in some cases, with pepper, chili, and/or vinegar.

In the Philippines, all the content of the Balut is eaten, from the broth surrounding the embryo, the yolk, the young chick, and in some cases, the white as well. The province of Pateros is known to be the Balut Capital of the Philippines due to the numerous Balut makers in the area and their careful selection and incubation of their Balut.

Balut has been a part of a challenge in the popular TV show Fear Factor. It is also popularly believed to be an aphrodisiac.
